conservation of zanana masjid

The historic ladies mosque is located at the corner of the Khilwat Khana courtyard at the fort and was meant for the royal ladies of the fort. At the southwest corner of the Khilawat Khana courtyard is a small, heavily damaged mosque that originally served the women of Shah Jahan’s court. Stripped of its red sandstone and marble veneer and lacking a roof it is almost unrecognizable but for its distinctive orientation toward Mecca and its surviving mihrab (niche) at the center of the west wall. Directly south of the mosque is a small Sikh-era pavilion. This Mosque has been conserved by the Walled City of Lahore Authority in 2021.
